Happiness, Freedom, and Better Parenting: Why Divorce Is Better Than a Bad Marriage

Posted on August 11, 2016 in Divorce

Naperville family law attorneyLife is too short to spend it stuck in an unhealthy, unhappy marriage. Unfortunately, divorce is a difficult decision to come to, and people all too often get stuck focusing on the negatives of divorce rather than the future positives. Yes, divorce can seem risky. Yes, leaving a relationship is a major, difficult decision to make. If you are in an unsalvageable, unhealthy marriage, however, divorce may be a necessary step towards more freedom and happiness in your life. Rather than focusing on the negative aspects of divorce, consider the many positives.

Be Yourself

Have you been suppressed in your marriage? Are you unable to pursue your interests? When was the last time you did something for yourself? While marriage may provide security, divorce will allow you the freedom to get to know yourself better. What do you want out of life? What are your goals? After your divorce, you will have time to focus on you, and also the chance to find a partner that supports whoever you want to be. People often worry about getting lonely after divorce. Do not fool yourself into thinking an unhealthy relationship is better than being alone. While adjusting to being single will take time, you will find yourself enjoying moments of solitude.

Happier, Healthier Children

Many parents believe their children will be adversely affected by their divorce, and instead choose to remain in unhappy marriages to spare their children. This idea, however, could not be further from the truth. Research shows that it is not divorce that impacts children, but rather, growing up in a hostile environment. As children get older, they develop their ideas of what love and healthy relationships look like based on what they see and experience. Do you want your children to witness an unhealthy marriage during their formative years? Do you want them to seek out partners who treat them poorly? Do you want them to develop the idea that a relationship means constant arguing? Teach your children to never settle for anything but wonderful, loving relationships.

New Love

It can be easy to forget what a healthy, loving relationship is like after living in a bad one for a while. While separating is a difficult decision to make, remind yourself that you will have the opportunity to seek out a new partner. One of the many positives of leaving a bad relationship is that you will better understand the things you are looking for in a relationship. Find someone who loves and understands you. Someone who supports your goals.

Feel Better

Living in an unhealthy relationship is more like surviving. You may be able to make it last, but it will take its toll on you. People often report feeling healthier and happier after divorce, like a weight has lifted from their shoulders. Being unhappy can cause your health to decline. The stress of a bad marriage may lead to high blood pressure, sleep troubles, and other negative health effects. Divorce can help you become a healthier person and feel better.
